Generations

My great grandfather E. Cliff Wooldridge was a Confederate soldier paroled in 1865 at Appomattox, Virginia.  My great great great grandfather was Captain Joseph Wooldridge, who fought in the Revolutionary War as part of the Continental Army.  Joseph was son of Thomas Wooldridge, grandson of John Wooldridge the blacksmith, father of Edmund Wooldridge, grandfather of E. Cliff Wooldridge, great grandfather of Eugene R. Woolridge, Sr., my grandfather.  Wow.  This line of ancestors got me thinking and praying about legacy and generations and led me to pen this prayer for my children and all who come after, paraphrased loosely from Psalm 129, with the hopes that a new generation of faithful service to God and country may be raised up:

"May the generations of my family not be those who mock or disbelieve.  May they be those who are believers.  May they not be oppressors of the righteous.  May they gain victory over the oppressors, may the Lord cut them all free from the cords of the wicked.  May they walk in the glorious freedom of the Sons and Daughters of God!  May they love Zion, God's dwelling place!  May they be heavenly minded and earthly good.  May what they touch their hands to prosper.  May the Lord God be glorified in what they say and do!  May they be saved from all their transgressions.  May they not be the scorn of fools!" ©2010 Ray Woolridge
